Overview
The Hal Sensor 3144 is a high-sensitivity, bipolar Hall-effect magnetic sensor engineered specifically for electronic commutation in brushless DC (BLDC) hub motors, throttle assemblies, and speed-sensing modules. Encased in a compact, industry-standard TO-92 package, this sensor detects changes in magnetic flux generated by passing rotor magnets, providing accurate digital switching signals to the motor controller. Whether you are repairing a malfunctioning electric scooter hub motor that stutters under load or rebuilding a custom e-mobility powertrain, the 3144 sensor delivers reliable thermal stability, precise rotor positioning, and long-term durability across variable operating voltages.
Key Features
High-Sensitivity Magnetic Switch: Optimized to detect south and north magnetic poles with high precision for accurate BLDC motor commutation.
Wide Operating Voltage Range: Supports standard logic supply voltages (typically 4.5V to 24V DC), ensuring seamless compatibility with standard EV controllers.
Open-Collector Output: Provides clean digital switching signals to feed rotor position data directly back to the motor controller logic board.
Compact TO-92 Package: Small form factor allows for tight placement inside motor stator slots and miniature throttle sensor housings.
Built-In Reverse Polarity Protection: Internal circuitry guards against accidental wiring mistakes during custom soldering and installation.
Thermal Stability: Engineered to maintain reliable switching performance across wide operational temperature extremes (-40°C to +85°C).

How to use
1.Isolate Power & Gain Access:
Turn off the scooter ignition and switch off the main circuit breaker. Disconnect the main battery pack and unbolt the motor wheel hub from the scooter frame to access the stator wiring.
Verification: Vehicle display is unpowered and the motor cable is detached from the vehicle controller.
2.Disassemble Motor Cover & Remove Stator:
Unbolt the side cover screws around the motor rim. Carefully slide the stator core out from the magnetic rotor housing (take care as the strong permanent magnets pull firmly).
Verification: Internal copper windings, sensor PCB plate, and existing Hall sensors are fully visible.
3.Desolder Faulty Sensor & Clean Slot:
Identify the faulty 3144 Hall sensor on the stator board. Use a soldering iron and desoldering pump to remove the 3 pins (VCC, Ground, Output) from the PCB, then clean the mounting slot of excess solder and adhesive.
Verification: The PCB pads are clean, intact, and free of shorting solder bridges.
4.Install & Solder New 3144 Hal Sensor:
Insert the 3 pins of the new 3144 TO-92 IC into the stator slot, paying close attention to pin orientation (VCC, Ground, Signal). Solder the pins securely to the PCB pads and clip off excess lead length.
Verification: Solder joints form shiny, smooth cones with no cold solder joints or shorted adjacent pins.
5.Reassemble Hub Motor & Test Commutation:
Reinsert the stator back into the magnetic rotor hub, replace the side cover plate, and torque down the casing screws. Reconnect the 5-pin Hall sensor harness to the controller and test motor rotation under low throttle.
Verification: Motor spins smoothly and quietly without cogging, sputtering, or throwing Hall sensor error codes.
Care and maintenance
Store the sensor in a cool, dry place away from strong external magnetic fields to prevent accidental latching or sensitivity degradation over time. Handle the delicate TO-92 terminal leads with care during handling to avoid bending or snapping the pins near the plastic base housing.
Questions & answers
What is the primary function of the Hal Sensor 3144 (0604)?
It acts as a magnetic switch that detects rotor magnet positions to ensure precise electronic commutation in BLDC motors and throttles.
What operating voltage range does this Hall sensor support?
It operates reliably across a wide 4.5V to 24V DC logic voltage range provided by standard motor controllers.
What package type is used for the 3144 Hall sensor?
It comes in an industry-standard 3-pin TO-92 through-hole package designed for slot mounting and PCB soldering.
Can this sensor be used in electric scooter throttle assemblies?
Yes, it is fully compatible with BLDC hub motors, speed sensors, and thumb, twist, or foot throttles.
What type of output signal does the sensor provide?
It provides a digital open-collector output that sinks current when a magnetic pole of sufficient strength is detected.
What operating temperature range can this sensor tolerate?
It is rated to operate reliably across extreme industrial temperatures ranging from -40°C up to +85°C.
How do I identify the proper pinout configuration during replacement?
Looking at the flat side of the TO-92 package with pins facing down, Pin 1 is VCC (Power), Pin 2 is Ground (GND), and Pin 3 is Output (Signal).
